The real Dick G.
Mar. 27th, 2010 07:01 pmI was a little sad when I realized I would never work with Joe Orlando. I was very sad when we lost Edvin Biuković so young; I thought comics needed him. One day I suppose I will kick myself harder than usual for never getting into comics & gaining the chance to work with José Luis García-López.
Dick Giordano is in those guys' league. Yet I find myself not so much sad he's dead as wistful. I know that Dick's hand had lost much of his magic some years ago. The time was coming. (ETA: Or maybe not; maybe the thing I'm remembering was another artist, & I didn't have the whole thing. No, wait, I'm remembering an early Birds of Prey story that may have been a rush job. Yeah, I posted this before seeing icon_uk's recent DG sketches.)
I knew Dick as an editorial figure, through his "Meanwhile..." column in DC Comics. He spoke like a person, not an overcaffeinated hype machine (*cough* most Marvel & DC editorial page writers since Dick & Jim Shooter had their respective pages *cough*). He was also, even by the time I came around, a renderer of gorgeous work.
I wish I believed in an afterlife, Dick. I would like you to be cartooning in Heaven.
