Violence to lyrics
Jan. 2nd, 2014 05:19 pmI wonder if some of it is because I have been taking very cold showers lately, and there's something about singing in a hypothermia-inducing shower and doing it shouty and very very wrong. It's certainly in that context that "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" gets quoted like this:
But I have done this sort of thing in warm showers and in better weather, and when just puttering around the house, and a lot of this is not while showering.
In any case, I find myself lately really pushing on nonsense versions of the songs of my youth. Especially, for some reason, "In the Valley," by Midnight Oil. Here's the video. A mellow song, full of very particular memories of Australia. Which for some reason, years ago, entered my shower singing repetroire in heavy rotation. Even now, when my cassette deck has not been working for months, so I haven't been listening to Earth and Sun and Moon, it comes out unbidden, if much forgotten and reduced to fragmentary form.
(I love that line, "I hope my country claims its own." That's possibly partly how it happened. But it's not a song I started out liking especially, though there is some nice Oilsy guitar in places.)
But lately, oh, lately, I've mainly just kind of been singing a snippet of refrain, without the verses:
I need to fix my tape deck.
Sweet dreams are made of fistsIt's a distraction of a kind from the icewater.
You and I should disagree
I've traveled the world and the lonely sea
Ev'rybody's looking for--EARWAX
[or something else random and possibly obscene]
But I have done this sort of thing in warm showers and in better weather, and when just puttering around the house, and a lot of this is not while showering.

In the valley I walkPossibly adding:
In the valley, oh yeah
In the valley I walk
Who will take me there?
I hope the kids'll take it slowAnd then it occurred to me to imagine a Very Bad Cover by some stereotypically bad rock band:
I hope my country claims its own
Yes I dooo
In the valley I ROCK!:shrugs:
In the valley oh yeah
In the valley I ROCK!
Who will take me dere?
In the valley I rock and roll
In the valley I save my soul
In the valley, the valley I rock
Who will take me there?
I hope the kids will take control
I hope my country gains its soul
Yeah I do-oo-oo
I need to fix my tape deck.
