So in a recent s_d post on Knight & Squire I admitted my bigotry. I don't want British--or Scottish even--writers writing "American" comics.

Now, that's rather sweeping. I really don't have anything against Jamie Delano, Alan Davis, or Mike Collins.

Warren Ellis is interesting sometimes. I don't like Paul Cornell, but it's mostly eye-rolling indifference.

I've read a quite small number of things by Nail Gaiman that I liked. I think Grant Morrison's work is adolescent gibberish (yes, all of it).

Alan Moore has written some things I really liked, but then he got conditioned to produce more stuff like his Marvelman gorefic, & well, there he went. I'm not really sure what Mark Millar's problem is; I think he used up all his niceness on "Superman for the Animals" back in the day, so he has to be all creepy all the time now.

And then there's Garth Ennis. Oh good lord, how does this guy get work? Did we really have to go to another freaking country to find someone who writes his sort of dreck?

But are British writers really worse than American comic book writers? Not really, American comic book writers mostly suck. Go back a generation: Ostrander's fixated on killing off characters. Howard Chaykin & Frank Miller are antisocial loons. Marty Pasko has had more practically unreadable stuff published than you can believe.... Geoff Johns has imbibed the bad habits of Roy Thomas, John Ostrander, & Alan Moore, & made it an ethic. No, most comic book writing sucks.

But the idea that British comic book writers are good, that they're literary, it offends me. You didn't hire bloody Oscar Wilde, just some louse looking to make a buck off the US market. Why do we have to import idiots? Whence this ridiculous Anglophilia?

And yes, I have a Doctor Who icon. What's your point?

Let the Brits form their own industry & go their own way. Stop bringing them over here as if they were bringing over something high culture, when it's really just the same old cynical crap we generally get from them. Blasphemy fic, if you will: "Everything sucks, God hates me, I hate him, everything is covered in puke...." It's not even worth using as toilet paper.

I was vaguely interested in Knight & Squire as it upended that. It presented a Britain that was actually inhabited by well-meaning blokes rather than wild-eyed psycho killers caked in their own vomit. Astounding! But then they had to bring in the stupid bloody Joker & have lots of quirky GrantMorrison-esque characters job to him to evoke an Alan Moore despair trope.

Yes, a Yank could have written this tripe, but I just...

...screw it, I outgrew comic books of the sort DC publishes long ago. I need to stop hanging around fandom, because I'm just what tvtropes calls Hate Dumb now.

...

So, have you heard the new Deathmøle song?

...

OK, more reasonable take here. I am being a douche.

You were born during a Third Quarter moon

This phase occurs in the middle of the moon's waning phases, after the full moon and before the new moon.

- what it says about you -

You like to make up your own mind. You may find it hard to relate to mainstream opinions on issues, and you definitely don't always like what's popular. You can work out solutions and give birth to big ideas when left to yourself, and other people will be impressed with your conclusions even if they're not sure how you arrived at them.

What phase was the moon at on your birthday? Find out at Spacefem.com

Weird. That's pretty specific for a cold reading.

On second thought, not really. It's flattery.

I kind of liked the Waning Gibbous answer too.

That which is hateful to me I will not do to my neighbor.

OK, I have a sort of online acquaintance who is a Yank trying to make it as a mangaka in Japan. Which is wild & crazy, & more power to her. I myself have an idle fantasy of how I would show-run Doctor Who--not that I would ever be allowed nor should I be.

Of course it's unfair of me to say that British comic book writers should stay on their side of the pond.

And it's even unfair (ow, ow, stop kicking me Hillel) of me to say that I wouldn't hire them. But I still want to say I wouldn't, because I am so sick of the colonial assumption that the British are automatically cool. They're not.

OK, here's a more coherent list. I would hire Alan Davis in a microsecond. I would hire Mike Collins, I liked his Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt. I would consider hiring Warren Ellis if I were publishing horror for some strange reason. I probably wouldn't hire Dave Gibbons, Jamie Delano, or Paul Cornell. I might pay the plane fare to bring over some of the others just to laugh in their faces as I inform them that they crossed the sea for nothing, nothing, you hear me, nothing, bwah-hahaha! (This would include eating a big ol' hamburger in Morrison's case, & tugging Alan Moore's beard if he showed up.) And there are a couple I'd be tempted to defenestrate.

Really, I think it was Alan Moore naming his imprint America's Best Comics that sent me over the edge. Well, that & Millar in general.
