passage from a novel of the future
May. 28th, 2010 07:46 pmI find it very hard to write. Scenes come in pieces sometimes, but it's more the chaotic flow of concepts.
Theo didn't know much about religion, but a memory came to him of his uncle Roger's regular festival toast. "This one's for the King!" he'd say, swinging his right arm forward & a bit to the right, letting the "goo'booze" slosh out of his wineglass a bit. "This one's for the King of King of Kings!" he'd continue, gesturing more to the left, sloshing a bit more. "And this one's for Freddie!" he'd say, raising the glass high & then drinking it down.
"I believe in the King, the King of Kings, & Freddie," he said.
"Freddie? Who's Freddie?" asked the white woman.
"He was a rock--he was a singer, I guess you'd say."
"A singer?"
"Weren't they all?"
The white woman muttered something about the state of education in the mountains. "Well, that's not important. If you believe in Jesus that's a good start."
