brief foray into crank politics
You know, I think calling the money we get from the government for the safety net 'benefits' is unhelpful, maybe misleading. Does that say 'bare minimum to live on' to you? Because that's all it's meant to be, enough to survive on. If they called it 'minimum survival money' and then talked about cutting it by a third to pay criminal fines, there'd be a whole different debate.
I know a lot of people who object to paying anyone "bare minimum to live on" unless they are one's employee and it's meant to be an "incentive" to keep coming in to work. I recently learned this is the stuff of the extinct "Whig" political theory, from a party that died when the franchise expanded. Apparently I'm surrounded by crypto-Whigs.
Me, I think we should co-opt that American right-wing line about running the government like a business. Let's run the state like a business in which we are all partners. Elect a board that'll pay higher dividends!
