This bears the earmarks of a Buffy solution
If you haven't seen Epitaph Two yet, I don't know what to tell you.
The explosion has to be triggered manually? That's bullshit; he wanted to die. And it's a Buffyesque trope: Topher sees himself as the artifact too dangerous to exist, so he kills himself. And Adele lets him. That does mean that various characters get what they want, but also means their engineer is gone in case something goes wrong. The last half of this season has had a bit too much Adele not seeing things or letting Topher's mind do more damage than it should. That's disappointing.
What's good: Victor's freakshows were neat. Cool to see Tony & Priya are still Tony & Priya. Good lord, they really are the soldier & the flower child, how sex-roles tropey!
