Have I mentioned that I am completely indifferent to Wondy's Star Sapphire costume? It's not actually sexy to me, in fact I find it dull & ugly; it's not like Di lacks a history of running around in less; it's a stupid sexist trope to put the girl in pink; it's in a stupid crossover based on a version of Green Lantern I despise & would cavalierly retcon (not even explicitly, but by implication, in a single caption, were I writing GL); sapphires are blue for Og's sake, if you're going to retcon GL at least fix that you cretins; and frankly I think both Johns & Rucka are prone to bad ideas badly written.
Anyway, my take on Wondy has long been that I wanted to write it & make something of it because the trademark had such potential squandered on sexist ideas of how to write feminism. Or as the Invincible Super-Blog put it:
Still, even with that opinion and the bristling at DC’s constant assurance that she’s part of some “Trinity” with Batman and Superman, I understand that there’s a value to the character that, if nothing else, is symbolic. For better or worse, she’s the most recognizable female character in comics, and while there’s an overwhelming mediocrity to her history, the two or three good times prove that you can do something great with her. Somewhere in there, there’s a strong character. (hence)
I have to shrug this 'Blackest Night' jive off. This is nowhere near the worst thing Di has been made to do in a JLA story &/or her own book. Not even this decade. This is better than dithering around in 'Amazons Attack!', better than claiming that Waynetech could build an invisible helicopter, better than letting Dr Psycho do the supervillain saunter in Rucka's run after he'd killed three men in front of her. I'm actually not bothered. For Wondy, this is actually relatively good writing.
