This is so infuriating.
luckily marc wasn't physically beaten. he WAS put in a cold cell for many hours without a jacket. he WAS denied legal help. he WAS called all sorts of names, accused of all sorts of crimes, and generally treated like scum.
we still don't know why.
calling the american embassy over here was useless. they 1) have no record of him being detained in the first place, much less why and 2) were the ones who told me that after a year of being married i could take him home with me.
when he got deported again.
we were treated like scum again, BOTH of us, again for nothing. when i told them what i was told by the embassy they scoffed and suggested i get it in writing next time.
Xenophobia against Canadians is a sign of not only ignorance, but stupidity. No, the 9.11 hijackers did not come through Canada, but through student visas into the US. And no, that doesn't mean we should have banned foreign students either. We have to have security at the points that matter. The border is not that point.
Now, here, I can tell what provoked the attack. The driver got out of the car at the checkpoint. Seriously, I got out of a car on a traffic stop once, got tackled & arrested. OK, I was in a bad emotional state that time, but I think it's procedure for cops in my hometown to arrest any stopped driver who exits the vehicle & refuses to get back in. And it's probably worse at a border. They probably arrested the man so they could have bomb squad check the car.
Not that this is OK, exactly.
